Welcome to the West Stratford Website

West Stratford is a proposal to create a high quality development of new homes, a relief road, a new primary school, a new park open to the public and other improvements to the west of Stratford upon Avon.

After years spent working closely with Stratford-on-Avon District Council to create a quality scheme in accordance with the council’s development strategy, Bloor Homes and Hallam Land Management submitted a planning application for land in Shottery, West of Stratford, in October 2009.

Our application includes a new Relief Road to relieve traffic congestion in the town, a new and improved primary school to replace St Andrews school, a new convenience store and a range of community facilities for Shottery and the surrounding area, plus new landscaped public parkland.

All of these facilities are much needed for Stratford, but can only be delivered through funding realised from the development of new housing and employment.

The new housing is needed to sustain the future economic growth of Stratford upon Avon and to provide improved access to the local housing market. Many of the new homes will be discounted for first-time homebuyers making it easier for local families to get a foot on the housing ladder. Our surveys show that low cost housing is in short supply in the district.

However, despite years of work, Stratford-on-Avon District Council refused planning permission in September 2011 against the recommendations of its own officers. We appealed the decision and a Government Planning Inspector will now reassess the application and a Public Inquiry will begin on the 1st April 2012, lasting four weeks.

Meanwhile, the council is consulting local people on its new strategy to “disperse” thousands of new houses among dozens of villages in the district – an approach that we consider has major flaws.

This approach could see some smaller villages grow by up to 14% of their current housing numbers and will place new homes away from existing services, infrastructure and employment opportunities. You can find out more about this strategy and why it can't work here

We have created this website to provide a source of factual information about the proposals and to encourage local people and organisations to participate in discussion about all of the issues for the town, not simply short-term “not-in-my-backyard” considerations.
